Colaiste Choilm’s 1st Year basketballers had a great victory over Saint Marist College, Athlone, on Thursday 23rd Jan. The game took place in our school hall and began at 10.30 am.
The match started with Colaiste Choilm heavily on the front foot, with Kai Rufaro and Danny White both scoring lay-ups in quick succession, before Dylan Farren also added his name to the scoresheet. Marist did eventually score a lay-up towards the end of the first quarter, but with the foot on the accelerator, Colaiste Choilm scored 2 more lay-ups, courtesy of Danny white and Kai Rufaro once again, before Dylan Farren scored an immaculate 3 pointer. He also scored a free throw before the close. First Quarter ended with CC leading 14-2.
The second quarter started just like the first, with Finn Kelly and George Plunkett both adding to a growing lead. Marist did score a lay-up, but it was quickly wiped out as George Plunkett scored another and Liam Sweeney scored a free throw. Kevinas Bigelis scored 2 lay-ups and Finn Kelly increased the deficit before the whistle. Second Quarter score was 29-4 to CC.
The third quarter began differently than the rest, with Marist finally producing a few lovely moves to add 6 more points to the scoreboard. Colaiste Choilm responded brilliantly, with Danny White and Ronan Kinnarney scoring 2 points a piece, before Marist bounced back, scoring 3 lay ups with no reply. Jamie Hoey was introduced 2 minutes before the quarter drew to a close and ended up scoring to just give CC a bit of relief going into the final quarter. The scoreboard read 34-16 to Colaiste Choilm after the third quarter.
The final quarter was the quarter with the least action. Jake Maher added another 2 points to the ever growing CC tally, with George Plunkett following shortly after. Kevinas Bigelis added his name to the scoresheet with the introduced sub, Liam Sweeney, putting another point under Colaiste Choilm’s name. A late rally from Marist wasn’t enough as CC emerged with the win with a 41-24 scoreline.
Dylan Farren was excellent on offense and George Plunkett’s name was repeatedly on the scoresheet. Danny White was a great leader while Ronan Kinnarney never stopped running.
