Music
Music plays a vibrant and valued role in life at Coláiste Choilm, both within the classroom and across our wide range of extracurricular activities. Under the dedicated leadership of Ms Hogan, our Music Department fosters a dynamic and inclusive environment where students are encouraged to explore, create and perform.
Throughout the year, students have numerous opportunities to showcase their talents in well-established events such as Battle of the Bands and One Night Only. These performances are highlights of the school calendar, providing students with a platform to build confidence, collaborate creatively and develop their musical ability.
Coláiste Choilm has a proud tradition of nurturing musical talent, with many past pupils going on to achieve significant success. Among them is Jamie McKeogh, a member of the internationally acclaimed Celt-grass band Jig Jam. More recently, Ronan Bell, Johnny Byrne and Ted Conway have found success as members of Chasing Abbey, who rose to prominence in 2017 with their hit single That Good Thing.
A particularly unique feature of our programme is the school pantomime, staged every second year. This much-anticipated production is a standout in an all-boys school setting, showcasing not only musical ability but also creativity, humour and teamwork on a grand scale.
Traditional Irish music also holds an important place in the school. The Trad Group performs at school and community events, including ceremonies and St Patrick’s Day celebrations, and has recorded two CDs — Faoin Droichead (2007) and Cairde Ceolmhara Choláiste Choilm (2017) — showcasing the depth of musical talent in the school.
Overall, the Music Department at Coláiste Choilm is a thriving hub of creativity and expression. Through strong leadership, varied opportunities and a genuine passion for performance, students are inspired to develop a lifelong appreciation for music.
